That's why in this post, we are spotlighting Alyssa Bunton's photography! We love partnering with other vendors and believe in community above everything. We were recently a part of a gorgeous, styled shoot with Alyssa and many other talented wedding vendors. Below, we interviewed Alyssa and learn about what got her into the photography business and why she's most excited about her fifth wedding season!
Some of the photographs below are taken from the styled shoot as well as some of her previous clients. Enjoy!
1. Was photography always a passion for you?
For as long as I can remember, photography has always been a passion of mine. When I was younger, I always begged my parents to let me use their cameras and when I got older my most, favorite birthday present was a digital camera. When I was in high-school, I carried that camera with me everywhere and after I graduated, I used all the money I had saved to buy my first digital SLR.
2. How long have you been in the photography business?
I shot my first wedding in May 2013, so this is my fifth wedding season. I have gone from booking 2-3 weddings a year to booking over 20 weddings this year.
3. What is your most memorable shoot? And why?
My first shoot will always be the most memorable. The first wedding I shot was in a beautiful old church. I can’t forget how nervous I was, but I truly think that helped me to start molding into a routine for a wedding day. I was able to learn a lot from that first day and want to continue improving.
4. How far do you travel for clients?
There is no limit to how far I will travel. I love going to new places and shooting at new venues. If travel exceeds Lancaster County and the surrounding areas, there is an additional travel fee based on the distance. I have a wedding booked in Mexico for 2019 and cannot wait.
5. What advice would you give to brides looking for a wedding photographer?
Find a photographer who best represents you and your style. My style is light and airy. I love the light and airy look because, to me, it screams timeless and elegance. That doesn't mean other options of photography are wrong, it’s just my personal preference. When choosing a photographer, it is always important to do your research and narrow down what you are looking for. Remember, you get what you pay for and photos are something that will last you a lifetime.
6. When should couples book a photographer for their wedding day?
No matter how long your engagement is, I would suggest trying to book a photographer as soon as possible. I know a lot of photographers and they tend to fill up rather fast. If you are looking at a photographer that limits the amount of weddings they shoot a year, they may already be full when you inquire. Plus, that check off one thing on your to do list.
7. In the competitive, wedding-photography industry, how do you set yourself apart from other photographers in the area?
Community over competition always. There are so many options for wedding photographers in Lancaster County. One thing that I think sets me apart is my starting price. I want to be able to be affordable and offer quality work. Again, it depends on the style of photography you are looking for, but I truly believe that everyone deserves beautiful photos of their wedding day.
8. Where are you favorite places to shoot? (Venues, outdoor vs indoor)
One of my most favorite venues to shoot at is The Excelsior in Lancaster. Let’s just take a minute to appreciate the grandness and also the stunning lighting throughout the whole venue. Indoor or outdoor, at that venue, you cannot go wrong.
Ideally I love shooting outdoors. I know the weather is unpredictable, but as a light and airy photographer, I prefer cloudy days to eliminate harsh shadows and squinting eyes. Any light and open spaces (like SUPPLY in Manheim) indoors are great too.
9. What are some of the “must have” shots couples should request from their photographer on their wedding day?
I am a huge fan of golden hour (sunset photos where the lighting is perfect on sunny days). It’s just a special time to be with the bride and groom to reflect on their day and spend some quality time together all while capturing gorgeous images. Family formals are also a must. We all know they make great family gifts and are usually the ones we end up hanging on the wall.
10. What are you most excited for in the upcoming wedding season?
I am most excited for shooting at new venues. I have some repeat venues this year, which is always great because I love establishing those connections with other local vendors. More importantly, I am shooting at a ton of new venues. I love meeting other new people who are in the same business and making new connections. This year, I will be traveling in and around Lancaster and Chester Counties.
